A hatchery is much more than a room containing an incubator or hatcher. The environment surrounding the machines can have a direct effect on embryo development, hatchability, chick quality and biosecurity.
A properly designed hatchery room should provide stable environmental conditions, adequate ventilation, good hygiene and controlled access.
Whether you are setting up a small commercial hatchery or a large-scale poultry operation, the following factors should be considered.
1. Maintain a Stable Room Temperature
The hatchery room should be maintained at a relatively stable temperature rather than experiencing large fluctuations throughout the day.
For many commercial hatchery installations, a comfortable room environment around 21–27°C (70–80°F) is a practical starting point, although the exact requirement depends on the incubator design, machine loading, ventilation and local climate.
The important point is that the incubator should not have to continuously compensate for extreme room-temperature changes.
Avoid:
- Direct sunlight on the incubator
- Extremely hot rooms
- Very cold drafts
- Sudden temperature fluctuations
- Placing machines directly beside heat-producing equipment
A stable room environment helps the incubator maintain its programmed operating conditions more consistently.
2. Provide Adequate Fresh-Air Ventilation
Ventilation is one of the most important aspects of hatchery design.
Developing embryos consume oxygen and produce carbon dioxide. As the embryo develops, its oxygen demand increases, particularly toward the later stages of incubation.
Therefore, the hatchery should have a reliable supply of fresh air.
Poor ventilation can contribute to:
- Increased CO₂ concentration
- Poor embryo development
- Reduced hatchability
- Weak chicks
- Uneven hatching
- Excessive heat and humidity
The ventilation system should be designed so that fresh air enters the room while stale air is removed without creating strong drafts directly across the machines.
3. Keep Incubators Away From Combustion Sources
Incubators and hatchers should not be installed close to gas heaters, diesel equipment or other combustion sources.
Combustion can affect air quality and introduce unwanted gases and contaminants into the hatchery environment.
Instead:
Incubator → clean air supply → controlled ventilation
is the preferred arrangement.
Heating systems should be designed so that combustion products cannot enter the hatchery's fresh-air supply.
4. Control Hatchery Access
A commercial hatchery should not be treated like a normal room where people can freely enter and leave.
Every person entering the hatchery can potentially introduce microorganisms.
Good hatchery biosecurity practices include:
- Restricting unnecessary visitors
- Providing dedicated footwear
- Maintaining clean work clothing
- Cleaning and disinfecting equipment
- Controlling movement between clean and dirty areas
- Keeping egg-handling and chick-handling areas organized
The objective is simple:
Reduce the number of opportunities for pathogens to enter the hatchery.
5. Keep the Hatchery Clean and Easy to Wash
The room itself should be designed for hygiene.
Where possible, use surfaces that are:
- Smooth
- Non-porous
- Easy to wash
- Resistant to commonly used disinfectants
- Free from unnecessary cracks and crevices
Floors should allow effective cleaning and drainage.
Walls and ceilings should also be maintained so that dust, feathers and organic material do not accumulate.
Remember that cleaning and disinfection are not the same thing.
Cleaning removes organic material such as dust, feathers, egg contents and dirt.
Disinfection is performed after effective cleaning to reduce microorganisms to an acceptable level.
6. Separate Clean and Dirty Areas
A well-designed commercial hatchery should ideally have a logical flow of materials and people.
A typical flow can be:
Egg Receiving → Egg Selection/Storage → Setter Room → Hatcher Room → Chick Processing → Chick Dispatch
Waste, broken eggs, fluff and other contaminated material should move through a separate or controlled route wherever possible.
This reduces the possibility of contamination moving backward into clean areas.
7. Don't Ignore Humidity
Humidity is another important environmental parameter, particularly during incubation and hatching.
However, room humidity and machine humidity are not necessarily the same thing.
The incubator/hatcher should maintain the required internal conditions according to the egg type, machine design and incubation program.
The hatchery room should provide a reasonably stable environment so that the machine can control its internal humidity effectively.
